About the ICAO English Test

General information about ICAO Language Proficiency requirements.

What is an ICAO Language Proficiency Test?

An ICAO Language Proficiency Exam assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English in an aviation environment and determines your ICAO Language Proficiency Level.

What is the difference between ICAO Level 4, 5 and 6?

Your ICAO language proficiency is assessed on a scale from Level 1 to Level 6. Level 4 is the minimum operational level, while Levels 5 and 6 demonstrate higher levels of proficiency. Level 4 is valid for four years, Level 5 is valid for six years. Level 6 does not need to be renewed once certified and has unlimited validity.

Can I achieve ICAO Level 6?

Yes, if you book our ICAO Language Test PRO. Your final level depends on the language proficiency demonstrated during your exam.

Which exam do I need?

If Level 4 is all you need, choose BASIC. If you want the opportunity to demonstrate ICAO Level 5 or 6 and benefit from the corresponding longer validity period, choose PRO.

What is the difference between BASIC and PRO?

With BASIC, the highest level you can achieve is Level 4, while PRO offers you the opportunity to achieve Level 4, Level 5 or even Level 6.

Do I need a pilot licence?

You do not need to hold a pilot licence to take the test. If you already hold one, please have it available during the examination.

Will you record the test?

Only the audio will be recorded and kept on file. No video will be recorded during your examination. For more information regarding data security please have a look in our Privacy Policy.

How is the grading done?

After the exam, your examiner will listen to the recording and assess your performance on a scale from Level 1 to Level 6. A second examiner, who is a linguistic expert, will then independently assess the same recording on a scale from Level 1 to Level 6. The lowest level awarded during this grading process will determine the ICAO Language Proficiency Level you receive.

Is the certificate accepted by authorities, airlines and other organisations?

The exam is conducted in accordance with ICAO language proficiency standards under EASA regulation. The resulting certificate is acknowledged EASA-wide. If you have specific questions about the validity of the certificate regarding your local CAA please contact us.

What happens if I don't get the Level I was aiming for?

As long as you achieve Level 4 or higher, you are operational and can use it to fly internationally. If you aimed for a higher level than you got you can just retake the exam as many times as you want.
